Class Description

This class introduces the trifecta of web technologies - JavaScript, HTML and CSS (cascading style sheets) - to middle and high school students. Learn how to structure web content using HTML and semantic markup, how to control the layout and look of content using CSS rules and properties, and how to add animation and interactivity using JavaScript.

Together, students will learn how to create components that are commonly seen throughout the web: different layout techniques, site navigation controls, slideshows, image galleries, and more. We will create a number of interactive pieces and games, like a memory game, tic-tac-toe, a flashcard drill, a trivia game, and an adventure game (note that we decide as a class which projects we build, so the list of things we actually make will vary).

Some of the programming topics covered include: variables, control flow, loops, functions, closures, object oriented JavaScript, the document object model (DOM), event handling, callback functions, and asynchronous execution. We will also cover the principles of responsive design, and will touch upon third-party JavaScript libraries, like jQuery.

No prior programming experience or knowledge is required, or expected - this is a great place to start!

For ages 12 & up.

About Think Space Studio

Our Westchester, NY based enrichment classes for middle school and high school teens teach the fundamentals of computer programming in a casual (but high-energy!), hands-on, small group environment. We focus on small achievable projects and goals to drive the learning experience - from making lightning, fire and optical illusions to creating games, puzzles, and programs - writing the code is never an end in and of itself, but is always a step on the way to making awesome things!

We teach the basic building blocks of computer programming from the ground up, using real-world text based programming languages like Java, JavaScript, Python, Swift, and HTML/CSS. Along the way, we invariably touch on general Computer Science concepts like binary & hexadecimal numbers, coding style, computer architecture, data structures, and a lot more.

Class sizes are intentionally kept small to encourage participation, and to allow the students to learn at a good pace while still being able to receive 1 to 1 help.
