A Wild Day at South Carolina's Greenville Zoo

By Meg Brunson

Grandma and Grandpa had a membership to the Greenville Zoo, so we joined them for a day at the zoo and had a blast seeing animals such as the giraffe (and a new baby), and my youngest's favorite: the lion!

The zoo is over 50 years old and is on a 13 acre park. We loved not only the animals, but the variety of trees and plants that line the pathways. There is a play area within the zoo, and a large playground are outside of the zoo's gates.

Upon entering, I enjoyed that they gave each person a quarter to put in their conservation bins. The way it's set up, you can learn about 5 different animals, and conservation organizations, then you can choose who to give your quarter to. It's a great way to introduce the kids to the concept of conservation, and also the decision making process of how to distribute our charitable funds.

Tips for an Extra Fun Visit

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes - there is a lot of hilly walking.
  • Hydrate - Bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated, even if it's not a hot day!
  • Play the scavenger hunt - The Greenville Zoo hides clues throughout the park for kids to search for. Get started online at https://www.greenvillezoo.com/195/Secret-Safari.
  • Special Events - the Greenville Zoo offers a variety of free programing with your paid admission. Check out what is happening at https://www.greenvillezoo.com/182/Free-Programs.

My parents bought the membership to the zoo because they enjoy going themselves - without kids - and I am glad that they offered to bring us along with them for a visit. If you're in the Greenville, SC area (with or without kids) you should definitely check out the Greenville Zoo! Start planning your trip at https://www.greenvillezoo.com/.
