The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) is committed to inspiring the next generation of visual storytellers and engaged citizens through exciting experiences that give students in grades 3–8 fresh opportunities to share stories and make media. Founded in 2001, the JBFC shows hundreds of films each year in our five-screen art house theater and pioneers a unique, hands-on approach to media literacy at our Media Arts Lab across the street.

To celebrate the 10th year of Summer @ the Lab, we’re offering a new approach: weeklong sessions that allow campers to dive into their favorite aspect of media, or mix and match different sessions to customize their experience. How much fun and learning can we pack into one week? Come and find out as you play, make, and explore with a range of cutting-edge technology in our state-of-the-art production spaces. With themes such as short film production, green-screening, special effects, board game design, animation, web series production, and more, there’s a perfect session for every camper!

With five, one-week sessions from Jul. 2—Aug. 3, campers and their families can design a schedule that works for them. Register for three or more weeks and receive a special discount! A typical day at Summer @ the Lab runs from 8:45 am—4:00 pm, and includes session-specific instruction, project-based media activities, an afternoon snack, and outdoor play at a nearby park (weather permitting).  Campers are responsible for bringing their own lunch, and a morning snack, if desired.

Our renowned faculty leads small groups of 10, and we maintain a ratio of one adult to every five campers, assuring individual attention. All sessions are held at the Media Arts Lab with occasional visits to the JBFC Theater just down the street, or into the village with supervision.

Need-based scholarships are available for every session, and we encourage all families to apply for the financial support that will make their child’s participation in Summer @ the Lab possible.
