Explore Sunnyside as a family home, and before or after your tour, play games and participate in hands-on-activities related to an aspect of the home’s history and Irving’s legacy. Themes and activities vary each week. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it.
Theme for Aug. 11: American Storytelling
Washington Irving wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle nearly 200 years ago, paving the literary path for other writers of American tall tales. Today, go on a literary adventure with Mr. Irving. See a shadow puppet performance of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Explore the grounds and solve our scavenger hunt word puzzle. Hear about Mr. Irving’s adventures and how they inspired him to write stories as you explore our historic cottage. Create your own bookmark or your very own shadow puppet at the craft table. During story time, hear beloved American tall tales, or take a book and read it under a tall tree.
