USS Westchester County LST-1167 aka WESCO was built for the US Navy at the end of the Korean War. Named for Westchester County, NY, she was the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name. One of the sailors killed was RD3 Keith Duffy, a resident of Westchester County.
The courageous actions of the crew that night, and during the days that followed, controlled the damage sustained and prevented a catastrophe that would have horrified the country. There were individual awards given including a Silver Star, seven Bronze Stars, five Navy Commendation Medals, five Navy Achievement Medals and thirty-two purple hearts.
